Department of Fisheries has proposed a 5-year project costing Tk47.55 crore to develop fisheries resources in 29 baors across four southwestern districts, aiming to increase fish production by at least 10 per cent and improve the living standards of genuine fishermen.
The project, titled Community-Based Fisheries Resource Management in Selected Baor Areas, covers Jashore, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga and Kushtia. It aims to dredge silted baors, establish fish sanctuaries, improve infrastructure for fry production, provide training and strengthen community-based management, said a press release on Thursday.
Proposed allocations include Tk11.2195 crore for dredging selected sections to increase depth and water-holding capacity. An allocation of Tk2.32 crore is proposed for establishing sanctuaries in all 29 baors to conserve native species and ensure natural breeding.
The plan also includes Tk1.7339 crore to renovate 35 existing fish fry production ponds, Tk1.40 crore for farm mechanisation, Tk1.20 crore for six deep tube wells, and Tk7.3108 crore to reconstruct six dilapidated baor management offices. Additionally, Tk2.90 crore is allocated for 290 beel nurseries and Tk7.6193 crore for releasing fry of rohu and native species. Tk8 lakh is proposed for IT equipment.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the initiative originated in 2025 when Jashore deputy commissioner took the initiative. Following the approval of the staffing structure under the current government, the Development Project Proposal was sent to the Planning Commission. The project is now awaiting assessment by the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC).
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md Delwar Hossain said the objective is to increase fish production while developing an effective management system involving local fishermen. Fishing will be restricted in designated sanctuary areas to allow natural breeding. During the monsoon, when fish spread into nearby rivers and beels, local fishermen will be able to catch them there.
