Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman on Monday said the country’s state reforms since the fall of autocratic rule have not met expectations.
Speaking at a press conference titled “One and a Half Years After Autocratic Rule: Expectations and Achievements”, he said progress has been limited, while shortcomings remain extensive.
He criticised the July Charter for ignoring dissenting opinions, saying it weakened the document and created confusion among the public.
Urgent reform proposals were largely unimplemented, and most actions that were taken were symbolic.
“The bureaucracy has played a central role in delaying meaningful change, often conflating justice with retribution” added.
Iftikharuzzaman also noted that attempts to influence elections are visible. While power was once concentrated, a three-party influence is now emerging.
He said, “Decision-making often follows a pick and choose approach, with poor coordination among officials.”
He further highlighted that commitments to disclose Advisory Council members’ assets, a key accountability measure, have not been fulfilled.
“These steps are crucial for a responsive and transparent administration, yet there is clear reluctance,” he added.
