The measles situation in Bangladesh continues to deteriorate, with three more suspected measles deaths recorded in the 24 hours to 8am on Sunday, taking the total number of suspected and confirmed measles-related fatalities to 1,022 since 15 March.
According to the latest figures from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 171,543 suspected measles cases have been registered nationwide between 15 March and Sunday.
During this period, 20,069 cases were laboratory-confirmed. The overall death toll comprises 922 suspected measles-related deaths and 100 confirmed measles-related deaths.
In its Sunday health press release, the DGHS reported 905 new suspected measles cases and 63 confirmed cases detected between 8am on 12 September and 8am on 13 September.
During the same 24-hour window, three suspected measles patients died, with two deaths recorded in Dhaka and one in Chattogram.
Dhaka identified the highest number of new suspected cases over the 24 hours with 456, followed by Chattogram with 166, Barishal with 78, Khulna with 74, and Mymensingh with 57.
A total of 151,024 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country since 15 March, while 145,252 patients have been discharged following treatment.
Meanwhile, under the National Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign, 19,771,720 individuals have received doses against a target of 18,015,064. This brings the total vaccination coverage to 109.8 per cent.
