Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup remains uncertain as the International Cricket Council (ICC) convened a board meeting to discuss the ongoing standoff with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Bangladesh are unwilling to travel to India for the tournament and have formally requested that their matches be relocated to Sri Lanka. The BCB and the ICC have already held two rounds of discussions — one online and another in Dhaka, where the ICC sent a representative — but neither meeting produced a breakthrough. With less than two weeks remaining before the start of the World Cup, clarity is still lacking over whether Bangladesh will take part and, if so, where they will play.
The issue has now reached the ICC board primarily for two reasons. First, earlier talks between the ICC and the BCB failed to yield a resolution, making board-level intervention unavoidable. Second, Bangladesh are a full member of the ICC. Any move to exclude them from a World Cup they have directly qualified for would require consultation with other full member boards and, in some cases, their backing. Bangladesh cannot be removed unilaterally through executive authority.
At present, the positions of the two sides remain starkly opposed. The BCB have made it clear they do not want to send the team to India under any circumstances. On Tuesday, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul reiterated that Bangladesh would not bow to what he termed unjustified pressure to play the World Cup in India. Conversely, the ICC are reluctant to shift Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka, citing logistical challenges.
While disputes of this nature often leave room for compromise, no middle ground has emerged so far. Either Bangladesh will need to soften their stance, or the ICC will have to reconsider their position.
According to cricket-related media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are the only full member board to have openly supported Bangladesh. On Wednesday, the PCB sent a letter to the ICC backing Bangladesh’s concerns. No other board has supported the proposal to move Bangladesh’s matches outside India, despite security concerns being raised over the safety of players such as Liton Das and Mustafizur Rahman.
If the BCB or the Bangladesh government ultimately refuse to allow the team to travel to India, Bangladesh may withdraw from the T20 World Cup altogether. At this stage, that outcome appears increasingly likely.
