The High Court (HC) on Monday granted anticipatory bail to 40 accused, including Mahmudul Haque Rubel, BNP candidate for the Sherpur-3 constituency, in a case filed over the killing of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Sherpur.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Kamrul Hossain Molla and Justice Faisal Hasan Arif granted the bail for six weeks.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal represented the accused during the hearing.
According to case documents, a violent clash that took place on 28 January during an election manifesto announcement programme organised by the Jhenaigati upazila administration.
The incident reportedly began over a dispute related to seating arrangements, which escalated into a confrontation between leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP.
Rezaul Karim, secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sreebardi upazila unit, sustained critical injuries in the clash and later died while being taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
According to police, the victim’s wife, Mosammat Marjia, filed the case with Jhenaigati Police Station on 31 January. The complaint names 234 individuals and includes an additional 400 to 500 unidentified persons as accused.
