The trial over the high-profile murder of Chattogram Supreme Court and Chattogram Bar lawyer Saiful Islam Alif entered a crucial phase on Monday, with the formal start of witness testimony at the Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal.
The hearing began at 11am, with all accused except the prominent suspect former ISKCON leader Chandan Kumar Dhar, alias Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari produced in court under tight security. Chinmoy Krishna Das was produced in court from jail through an audio-visual (virtual) system. His presence was confirmed via the LED monitor and audio system installed in the courtroom.
The first witness, Alif’s father and case plaintiff Jamal Uddin, gave his testimony, marking the beginning of this significant stage of the judicial process.
After the testimony, Chinmoy Krishna’s lawyer requested additional time to cross-examine him. The tribunal approved the request and scheduled the next hearing for 18 February.
Jamal Uddin said, “I want justice. The accused are trying to delay the case. I urge the government to ensure a speedy trial.”
Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury added, “The nation is waiting to see justice in this brutal killing. Today’s witness testimony has moved the process forward, though the defence is attempting to delay proceedings. We expect a fair verdict at the earliest.”
The investigating officer has requested summons for nearly 50 witnesses listed in the charge sheet, including eyewitnesses, magistrates who recorded statements, doctors who conducted the post-mortem, officials who seized and submitted evidence, and law enforcement personnel involved in the investigation.
Additional police were deployed around the tribunal to ensure security during the hearing. Lawyers expect a swift verdict through the speedy trial process due to the sensitive nature of the case.
