He was from Rupnai Sadhupara village under Enayetpur Police Station in Sirajganj, and lived with his family in Bardeshi, Aminbazar.
Altaf was attacked Saturday night in Aminbazar after protesting the misbehaviour of men in a private car that had struck a rickshaw.
According to police and locals, around 8pm an elderly rickshaw puller was repairing his vehicle on a road in Bardeshi village when a private car hit him and the rickshaw. Witnessing the incident, Altaf confronted the occupants over their conduct and the assault on the elderly man.
At that point, four to five youths from the car attacked him. They later returned with more people and beat him indiscriminately.
The SB officer was left critically injured and unconscious. He was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors declared him dead.
OC Saiful said police recovered the body and launched an investigation. Efforts are under way to identify and arrest those involved. Preliminary findings suggest he was killed for protesting wrongdoing. Further details will be known after investigation, the OC added.
