Two motorcycle-borne muggers snatched a handbag containing cash and valuables from the wife of a journalist in the capital’s Shyamoli area on Saturday morning, leaving her with a finger injury.
The incident occurred around 7:15 am near the footbridge opposite Shishu Mela as Dainik Amader Shomoy Crime Department Chief Shahjahan Akand Shuvo and his wife were travelling in an auto-rickshaw.
Shuvo said they were travelling from Azimpur to Kalyanpur, where his wife was due to board a Kushtia-bound bus for urgent family work.
As their auto-rickshaw approached Shishu Mela, two muggers on a motorcycle came from behind, snatched his wife’s handbag and fled towards Shyamoli.
His wife injured a finger during the snatching.
The stolen bag contained cash, a mobile phone, a bank debit card, a metro rail card and other valuables.
Similar mugging incidents have previously occurred in Shyamoli and surrounding areas, some resulting in fatalities.
Shuvo said he had lodged a written complaint with Mohammadpur Police Station.
Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Halim said several police teams were conducting operations to identify and arrest those responsible.
Police were also examining footage from multiple closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to identify the suspects, he added.
