Actress Pori Moni has built a strong public profile over more than a decade in showbiz, but turning that fame into consistent success at the box office remains a challenge.
As she turned 34 on 24 October, her career raises a question: what will it take for her to become a true superstar?
Born Shamshunnahar Smriti in Satkhira in 1992, Pori Moni lost her mother at the age of three and grew up at her maternal grandparents’ home in Pirojpur.
Pori Moni began her career in television dramas before making her film debut in Shah Alam Mondol’s ‘Bhalobasha Shimaheen’ in 2015.
Giasuddin Selim’s ‘Swapnajaal’ showcased her ability to move beyond glamour-driven roles, while films such as ‘Antor Jwala’, ‘Bishwoshundori’, ‘Adventure of Sundarbans’, ‘Gunin’ and ‘Ma’ offered her different characters.
Despite having more than 17 million Facebook followers, her personal life and controversies often attract more attention than her films.
Her arrest in a drug case in 2021 became one of the most widely discussed episodes of her life.
She has also worked in the web series ‘Rongila Kitab’ and made her Tollywood debut with ‘Felubakshi’. However, a sustained run of successful films has remained elusive. Her completed film ‘Dodo’s Story’ is yet to be released.
Pori Moni’s performances in ‘Swapnajaal’ and ‘Ma’ have demonstrated her potential. Strong scripts, memorable roles and consistent work could help her turn widespread recognition into lasting cinematic success.
She is also reportedly set to star opposite Ziaul Faruq Apurba in a new film, with shooting expected to begin this year.
