A tenant has died after his landlord allegedly struck him on the head with a stick during a dispute over house rent in Khulna city.
The deceased was identified as Rokibul Islam.
Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Rafiqul Islam confirmed the incident.
Rokib succumbed to his injuries at Khulna Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning.
According to locals and the deceased’s friends, a rent dispute had been ongoing between Rokib and his landlord, Majlis Khan, for several days. Although Rokib wanted to vacate the rented premises, the landlord refused to let him leave.
The dispute escalated into an altercation when Rokib returned home on Saturday night.
During the argument, the landlord allegedly struck him on the back of the head with a stick.
Rokib was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he died.
Police brought Majlis Khan and his wife, Fatema Begum, into custody for questioning over the allegations.
Demanding the arrest of those responsible, agitated locals staged a demonstration and besieged Sonadanga Police Station on Sunday morning.
OC Rafiqul said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy before being handed over to the family.
The victim’s family was preparing to file a formal complaint, and legal action would follow the investigation, he added.
