Bangladesh women face Sri Lanka in a crucial Group B clash at the Women’s Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday, knowing a win would put them within touching distance of the semi-finals.
Nigar Sultana Joty’s side opened their campaign with a 71-run win over Indonesia, but the victory did little to ease concerns over their batting.
Sent in, Bangladesh struggled to build momentum and finished on 129 for eight. Sobhana Mostary top-scored with 40, while Shorna Akter provided a late boost with an unbeaten 31 off 18 balls.
The bowlers then took control. Marufa Akter made early inroads before Nahida Akter claimed 3-15 as Indonesia were bowled out for just 58 in 17.3 overs.
Sri Lanka, however, present a far tougher challenge. They have won both of their matches so far, beating the UAE by nine wickets with 73 balls to spare before defeating Indonesia by 75 runs.
Those emphatic victories have also given Sri Lanka a significant net run-rate advantage and added confidence ahead of Sunday’s encounter.
Bangladesh’s record against Sri Lanka provides another reason for concern. They have won only three of their 16 women’s T20Is against the islanders, with their most recent victory coming in 2023.
Since then, Bangladesh have lost their last three T20Is against Sri Lanka, including all six matches in their 2026 series.
Despite the recent record, Bangladesh are determined to take the game on. Opening batter Juairiya Ferdous said the team’s aim is straightforward.
“Of course, we will try to win,” Juairiya said in an audio message.
Juairiya struggled to make an impact against Indonesia but is looking to contribute more against Sri Lanka, particularly during the powerplay.
“My role is to open the innings. I want to do well in the powerplay,” she said.
Bangladesh will return to the Dubai International Cricket Stadium for the match, having already played there against Indonesia. Juairiya believes that experience could prove useful.
“After playing the first match, we have an idea about the conditions at the ground and how the wicket behaves. That will help us against Sri Lanka,” she said.
With Sri Lanka leading the group on four points and Bangladesh sitting second with two, a victory would significantly strengthen Bangladesh’s position. Indonesia, meanwhile, have already been eliminated after losing all three of their matches.
Bangladesh’s immediate plan is to ensure every player delivers on their role.
“Our plan is for everyone to give their maximum and fulfil whatever role they have,” Juairiya said.
A win would take Bangladesh closer to the semi-finals, while also keeping alive their bigger ambition of reaching the final.
“If we can beat Sri Lanka, we will move strongly towards the semi-finals and get closer to our goal,” Juairiya said.
The match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium will start at 8:30pm Bangladesh time.
