Real Madrid have suffered a major setback ahead of their El Clasico clash against Barcelona after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was ruled out due to flu.

The Belgian goalkeeper will miss Monday’s match at Camp Nou, where Madrid will look to close the six point gap with La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Courtois, 34, has been an important player for Madrid this season. However, his illness has forced the club to make a late change to their squad.

Andriy Lunin will replace him in goal. The 27-year-old Ukrainian has plenty of experience as Courtois’ backup and played an important role in Madrid’s journey to the Champions League final in 2024.

“Courtouis is a last-minute withdrawal from tonight’s LaLiga matchday 10 game between Real Madrid and Barcelona due to a bout of the flu,” Madrid said in a statement.

“Illia Voloshyn has been called up to the squad in his place.”

Madrid enter the match under pressure after losing twice in La Liga this season. They suffered defeats against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have won all nine of their league matches and sit six points clear of their rivals.

However, Madrid have shown signs of improvement since the international break.

Courtois played a key role in their recent performances, including the 4-1 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig in midweek.

Madrid will also miss Vinicius Junior, who remains unavailable as he serves a four match domestic suspension.

With two important players missing, Madrid face a difficult challenge against an unbeaten Barcelona side.

The match will kick off at 2:00 AM Bangladesh Standard Time on Monday.
