South Africa off spinner Simon Harmer has been named the ICC men’s Player of the Month for November after his match winning performances in the Test series against India, where he played a central role in a historic away victory.
Harmer claimed the award for the first time, beating Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam and Pakistan all rounder Mohammad Nawaz in the voting.
The 35 year old was one of the standout performers as South Africa secured a 2–0 Test series win over India, their first series victory in Asia in 25 years. Across the two matches in Kolkata and Guwahati, Harmer took 17 wickets at an average of just 8.94.
He picked up eight wickets in the first Test and followed that with seven in the second, finishing the series as player of the series for his impact with the ball.
Reacting to the honour, Harmer said, “Being named ICC Player of the Month is a huge honour for me. Playing for my country has always been a dream, and to receive recognition like this makes it even more special.”
He added, “I want to share this award with my teammates, coaches and the support staff. I also dedicate it to my family, who have always supported me and allowed me to spend time away from home in pursuit of my dreams.”
Bangladesh’s Taijul was also in contention after an impressive month in home conditions. The left arm spinner took 13 wickets at an average of 26.30 in two Tests against Ireland, finishing as the leading wicket taker in Bangladesh’s 2–0 series win.
Taijul claimed five wickets in the Sylhet Test and followed that with four wickets in each innings of the second match in Mirpur, where he was named player of the series for his consistent performances.
