Galatasaray S.K. advanced to the Champions League last 16 after defeating Juventus FC in a dramatic extra-time encounter, eventually prevailing after a pulsating 5–5 aggregate fightback from the Italian side.
Holding a commanding 5–2 advantage from the first leg in Istanbul, Galatasaray appeared to be in control of the tie. However, Juventus produced a stirring comeback at the Allianz Stadium and came within minutes of completing one of the competition’s most remarkable recoveries.
Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli set the tone in the first half, calmly converting a penalty after Lucas Torreira fouled Khéphren Thuram.
The hosts’ task became even more difficult in the 49th minute when English defender Lloyd Kelly was dismissed. Initially shown a second yellow card, the decision was upgraded to a straight red following a VAR review, leaving Juventus with 10 men.
Despite the setback, the Italians responded magnificently. Federico Gatti tapped in from close range after a cross by Pierre Kalulu to reignite belief.
With eight minutes remaining, American midfielder Weston McKennie headed home to level the tie at 5–5 on aggregate, sending the Allianz Stadium into raptures and putting Juventus on the brink of an extraordinary turnaround.
As the match moved into extra time, fatigue began to take its toll on the 10-man hosts. Galatasaray seized their opportunity.
Victor Osimhen restored the visitors’ advantage with a clinical low finish after being played through by Barış Yılmaz.
With Juventus pushing forward in desperation, Yilmaz then sealed the victory himself, breaking clear and calmly slotting past goalkeeper Mattia Perin to end the contest.
Galatasaray, relieved but resolute, progress to the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 2013–14. They will face either Liverpool FC or Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.
