Police Week 2026 is set to begin on Sunday with colourful programmes lined up over four days under the theme “My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First”.
The week will kick off on Sunday morning with the annual police parade at the Rajarbagh Police Lines ground. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inspect and salute the parade of various police contingents and flag-bearing teams, and will deliver a directional speech to police members.
On the occasion, President Md Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir have issued separate messages.
In his message, the president said the stability, good governance and development of a state largely depend on the honesty, sincerity, professionalism and discipline of the police force.
He praised the police for their role in organising the recently held 13th national election freely, fairly and peacefully, and extended his heartfelt thanks to all members of the force.
The president also noted that crimes are becoming increasingly complex with the rise of cyberspace, AI and deepfakes being used for militancy, drug trafficking, human trafficking and financial fraud. He called for police members to be skilled in AI, data analytics, CCTV surveillance and digital forensics to face these challenges.
Public trust restoration a priority: PM
In his message, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government is implementing a detailed programme to establish a prosperous, self-reliant, justice-based and democratic state.
“However, achieving this goal will become difficult if people do not feel security and comfort at home and outside. Therefore, restoring public trust in the police and improving the law-and-order situation is our priority at this moment,” he said.
He urged police to play a more effective role in preventing mob violence, juvenile gangs and the spread of drugs.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, in his message, said every police member must become a symbol of service and trust to the people by being inspired by professionalism.
“Genuine criminals must be brought under the law. Maximum caution must be exercised so that no innocent person is harassed,” he said.
At the annual parade, the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM), President’s Police Medal (PPM), and their service variants will be awarded in recognition of extraordinary courage, heroic work and commendable contributions in 2025. The prime minister will present the medals.
Notable programmes include the Prime Minister’s visit to the stalls of the Bangladesh Police Women’s Welfare Association (PUNAK), the welfare parade with police members, the IG’s Badge and Shield Parade, and conferences with the home minister and IGP.
National dailies will publish special supplements, and television channels will air discussion programmes. Important roads in the capital will be specially decorated.
Police Week will conclude on 13 May.
