Former Miss Earth Bangladesh Meghna Alam has officially announced her intention to contest the Dhaka-8 constituency from Nurul Haque Nur’s Gono Odhikar Parishad, stating that she will run her campaign without relying on heavy posters or large-scale leaflet distribution.
The seat has already emerged as one of the most talked-about battlegrounds in the upcoming election. The BNP has confirmed veteran leader Mirza Abbas as its candidate for the constituency.
Dhaka-8 is being considered one of the significant seats in the upcoming election, especially after the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, the independent candidate of this seat and the spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, who was shot on December 12 and later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in Singapore on December 18. Prior to his death, he had been actively campaigning for the election.
Jamaat-e-Islami, meanwhile, is considering DUCSU vice-president Shadik Kayem as its nominee. Additionally, discussions are underway to feature the sister of Osman Hadi from the Inkilab Mancha platform.
Speaking to reporters in Dhaka recently, Meghna said she is an environmental activist and does not wish to waste paper in the name of electioneering. She noted that while some campaign materials would be visible, voters should not expect the usual flood of posters and banners commonly seen during elections.
Her announcement has reignited debate over whether a clean, environment-friendly campaign can succeed amid the country’s hard political realities, particularly in a high-stakes urban constituency like Dhaka-8.
