The body of a Fire Service and Civil Defence diver, who went missing after falling into the Shitalakkhya River during a maintenance operation at the Narayanganj River Fire Station, was recovered on Thursday evening.
The deceased was identified as Md Sadik, 26, son of Ashraf Sheikh of Kumrakandi village under Goalanda upazila in Rajbari.
According to the Fire Service Media Cell, Sadik’s body was recovered around 7:03pm by diver Meraj Ali of Aricha River Fire Station in Manikganj, who was attached to Tongi Fire Station.
The accident occurred around 11:20am while Sadik and two other Fire Service personnel were carrying out maintenance work on a speedboat near the river station jetty.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said three Fire Service members were removing water hyacinths that had accumulated near the jetty when Sadik fell into the river.
Immediately after the incident, rescue teams from the Fire Service, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard joined the search operation.
Sadik joined the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence on 24 October, 2021.
He had been serving as a diver at the Narayanganj River Fire Station and took part in several rescue operations with dedication and courage, officials said.
The Fire Service said Sadik had received a state award in recognition of his bravery and professional service.
