Loud explosions were heard early Sunday near Erbil airport in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, which hosts US-led coalition forces, an AFP journalist reported.
Thick black smoke was seen rising from the airport area, the correspondent added, raising concerns over fresh attacks on the military hub.
The incident follows Saturday’s events, when US-led coalition forces intercepted and shot down several missiles and explosive-laden drones over Erbil.
No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been confirmed. Security forces are monitoring the area, and investigations into the origin of the explosions are ongoing.
The airport has previously been targeted amid escalating regional tensions, underscoring ongoing risks to US and allied personnel stationed in Iraq.
