Ex-minister Saifuzzaman, wife sued over Tk55cr bribe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former land minster Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, wife and five others for taking bribes from a businessman amounting to Tk55 crore.

The Anti-Corruption Commission confirmed the matter on Tuesday.

The other accused include Saifuzzaman’s wife and United Commercial Bank’s former chairman Rukhmila Zaman, its former director Syed Kamruzzaman, Imperial Trading’s proprietor Abdul Aziz, Model Trading’s proprietor Mohammad Misbahul Alam, Yasinur Rahman and Aramit Thai Aluminium Limited’s former executive Yusuf Chowdhury.

The case statement said that the accused colluded with each other and intimidated HM Shipbreaking Industries Limited’s Managing Director Mohammad Sarwar Alam, a client of the UCB in Chattogram, into paying a bribe Tk55 crore.

“They received, transferred, transmitted, and converted the amount, and by smuggling it abroad and laundering money, committed punishable offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, and Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012,” read the statement.
