Police have detained 10 people in connection with the murder of a criminal, Jahidul Islam alias Picchi Jahid.
Jahidul, 35, was hacked to death on the night of 30 August in Monuarabad area of Purangar union.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Russel confirmed the detentions Tuesday morning, saying operations were ongoing and details would be provided later.
According to police and locals, Jahidul was attacked by a group of miscreants armed with sharp weapons, leaving him with severe injuries to his head and body. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Five days after the killing, Jahidul’s family filed a murder case with Satkania Police Station, following which law enforcement launched drives to identify and arrest those involved.
Jahidul, son of Nurul Islam alias Sarbahara Nuru from the Panchghariapara area of Purangar Union, allegedly had links to criminal activities in several areas, including Firozshah in Chattogram city.
Police records show that he faced at least 12 cases, including charges of murder, firearms, explosives and narcotics. Six of the cases were registered with various police stations in Chattogram district, while multiple cases were also filed with city police stations.
Law enforcement sources said Jahidul was involved in drug trading, extortion and arms violence in the Firozshah area.
He was previously arrested in January this year during a joint forces operation. At the time, law enforcement reported recovering 15 locally made firearms and 104 Yaba tablets from him, leading to separate cases under the Arms Act and Narcotics Act.
Police preliminarily suspect that Jahidul was murdered in a planned attack stemming from previous enmity. However, the exact motive and identities of those responsible remain to be confirmed through investigation.
The 10 detained individuals are currently being interrogated to verify their involvement and identify those behind the incident, Chattogram District Police said.
