A Dhaka court on Thursday placed retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury on a fresh four-day police remand in a murder case linked to violence during the July Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manjurul Islam passed the order after a hearing, following the completion of an earlier 11-day remand granted in three phases.
Investigators, led by Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin of the Detective Branch (DB), sought further remand, stating that interrogation of the accused had produced key information vital to the ongoing investigation.
Authorities argued that additional questioning is necessary to verify and expand upon those findings.
The defence, represented by lawyer Touhidul Islam Sajib, opposed the remand and sought its cancellation.
However, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of continued custody.
After hearing both sides, the court granted the prosecution’s request.
According to the case statement, the incident took place on 19 July, 2024, in Mirpur-10 Fruit Market area during an anti-discrimination student protest. Aassailants allegedly opened fire from multiple directions, leaving protester Delwar Hossain critically injured.
He was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and later shifted to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he died on 21 July at 7:40am while undergoing treatment.
The victim’s wife, Mosammat Liza, filed the murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station on 6 July, 2025.
Masud Uddin was arrested on 23 March from Baridhara area of the capital.
A court granted an initial five-day remand the following day.
Since then, he has been remanded multiple times in connection with several cases.
