A Dhaka court has ordered that former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Huq be shown arrested in connection with the murder of Abdul Qayyum in the capital’s Jatrabari area.
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam following a hearing on an application submitted by Inspector (Operations) Khaled Hasan of Jatrabari Police Station.
Dhaka Prosecution Department confirmed the court’s decision on Friday.
According to the case documents, the incident took place on 18 July 2024, in the Kajla area of Jatrabari during the anti-discrimination student movement and protests for quota reform. Members of various organisations, including the Chatra Dal, Juba Dal, and Krishak Dal, along with the general public, were conducting a demonstration at the time.
The prosecution alleges that the attack on the peaceful procession was carried out by members of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations, alongside law enforcement personnel, at the instigation of the accused, Khairul Haque.
Approximately 2,000 unidentified individuals, armed with firearms and sharp weapons, reportedly took part in the assault.
During the violence, Abdul Qayyum was shot in the chest in front of the Kajla police box and collapsed on the spot. He was rushed to Salman Diagnostic Centre, where the attending physician pronounced him dead.
A murder case was subsequently filed at Jatrabari Police Station regarding the killing.
