National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s ideals of equality, humanism, and communal harmony must be embraced to build an equitable and humane society, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian said on Thursday.
“Nazrul never allowed his conscience to be defeated. An achievement made at the cost of one’s conscience does not last,” he said, urging the younger generation to draw inspiration from the poet’s life, works, and uncompromising values.
Zahidul made these remarks while laying the foundation stone of the “Nazrul Open Stage” at DC Hill, marking 100 years since the poet’s stay there during his visit to Chattogram in 1926. The stage is being constructed at a cost of Tk 60 lakh, funded by the Chattogram Zilla Parishad.
“Nazrul was a poet who broadened the idea of humanity. We need to know him, and know him better,” Zahidul said.
He noted that Nazrul transcended religious divisions and championed unity among people of different faiths and cultures. His Islamic songs and Shyama Sangeet reflected a vision of coexistence and mutual respect, while his writings inspired people to stand against injustice, discrimination, and inequality.
“From 1926 to 2026- exactly 100 years later- we are trying to preserve that memory,” Zahidul said, referring to the poet’s association with DC Hill.
Describing DC Hill as a cherished space for Chattogram’s literature and culture enthusiasts, he said the district administration has been renovating and beautifying the area. As part of this initiative, the old stage associated with Nazrul is being transformed into a modern open stage, while Nazrul Square has also been expanded and beautified.
Zahidul said the younger generation should embrace and nurture Nazrul’s ideals, developing human values and a strong sense of conscience alongside knowledge and skills to help build the equitable and humane society the poet envisioned.
Once completed, the open stage is expected to host programmes on Nazrul’s literature, music, and philosophy, alongside other cultural events. Zahidul expressed hope that it would develop into a hub for Nazrul studies and cultural activities in Chattogram.
