A documentary about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has challenged the usual Halloween box-office pattern, narrowly moving ahead of DC’s horror film ‘Clayface’ in the race for the North American weekend’s top spot, writes Variety.
A24’s ‘You Can See Everything’, directed by Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder, is heading towards an estimated $10.8 million third-weekend collection. The film’s domestic total is expected to reach around $64 million. Warner Bros and DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’, meanwhile, is projected to earn $10.4 million in its second weekend, taking its domestic total to approximately $44 million.
The latest estimates give ‘You Can See Everything’ a narrow advantage, although the two films remain close. ‘Clayface’ has suffered an estimated 57% decline from its opening weekend, while the documentary has maintained a stronger hold after expanding its theatrical run.
The documentary follows Holmes and her rise and fall as the founder of Theranos. Its unusual box-office momentum has also drawn attention because documentaries rarely compete so closely with major studio releases during a Halloween weekend.
‘Clayface’, directed by James Watkins, centres on the DC Comics villain whose face undergoes a terrifying transformation. The film stars Tom Rhys Harries and has performed steadily despite its second-week drop.
Laika’s animated fantasy ‘Wildwood’ is expected to take third place with around $7.1 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to approximately $25.4 million. Black Bear’s ‘Wicker’ follows with an estimated $4.1 million, while ‘Street Fighter’ rounds out the top five with about $3.5 million.
The figures remain industry estimates ahead of the final weekend box-office results.
