One of rock music’s most celebrated songs began its journey with scepticism from critics and doubts within the music industry, writes Yahoo.
More than five decades after its release, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ has become a timeless classic, despite early reviews that questioned its unusual structure and ambitious sound.
Released on 31 October, 1975, as the lead single from the album ‘A Night at the Opera’, the nearly six-minute track challenged conventional pop songwriting.
Written by frontman Freddie Mercury, it moves through a piano ballad, an elaborate operatic passage and a hard-rock finale, without following the traditional verse-and-chorus format.
The song initially struggled to win over some critics. British music publication Record Mirror questioned its immediate appeal, while Rolling Stone later described it as a “brazen hodgepodge”.
Its length also raised concerns among industry figures, who doubted that radio stations would play such an unconventional single.
However, listeners quickly proved the sceptics wrong. The track topped the UK singles chart for nine consecutive weeks, becoming one of Queen’s biggest commercial successes.
Its promotional video also helped shape the future of music promotion. Widely regarded as an early example of the modern music video, the clip brought the band’s distinctive visual style to a wider audience.
The song experienced another surge in popularity in 1992 after featuring in the comedy film ‘Wayne’s World’. Its popularity grew further following the release of the 2018 biographical film ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, starring Rami Malek as Mercury.
The film earned more than $600 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards.
In December 2018, Universal Music Group announced that the song had surpassed 1.6 billion streams, making it the most-streamed track from the 20th century at the time.
It has since remained a defining entry in Queen’s musical legacy, regularly appearing on lists of the greatest songs ever recorded.
What critics once questioned has ultimately become one of rock music’s most enduring achievements.
