BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said efforts to destroy democracy in Bangladesh continue despite last year’s July mass uprising.
“After the mass uprising, various attempts and conspiracies are once again underway in present-day Bangladesh to destroy democracy,” he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks after placing wreaths at the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day.
Senior BNP leaders including Standing Committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Salahuddin Ahmed and Mirza Abbas were present.
Stressing the significance of 7 November, Fakhrul said Ziaur Rahman transformed the country during his four years in power. “He laid the foundation of a prosperous Bangladesh, which later paved the way for the country’s progress,” the BNP leader said.
“Revolution and Solidarity Day inspires us to follow the path that can build a truly democratic state, a prosperous nation, one that guarantees the people’s right to vote and justice,” he added.
“Bangladesh will move forward on that path, the BNP will move forward. We are working towards that goal,” Fakhrul said.
He declined to comment further on Jamaat-e-Islami’s proposal for dialogue, saying the party’s earlier press statement reflects the BNP’s final position.
