The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) on Friday demanded the permanent expulsion of 12 Jatiya Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and cancellation of their academic certificates for assaulting journalists at Shahbagh Police Station.
Submitting a formal complaint to Vice-Chancellor ABM Obaidul Islam, the association issued an ultimatum for the university to take disciplinary action by Friday afternoon.
In the complaint, DUJA demanded the immediate suspension of all students involved, followed by permanent expulsion pending an investigation.
They also sought the cancellation of certificates for any attackers who have already completed their undergraduate or postgraduate degrees.
Furthermore, the association called for the identification and expulsion of any other accomplices involved in the incident.
Responding to the allegations, the vice-chancellor expressed his regret to the journalists.
“I express my sorrow to you for this incident. We are acting against those involved,” the VC stated, adding that two committees have been formed immediately to investigate the matter.
He assured that the university would take steps in accordance with its established rules and regulations.
The vice-chancellor further said a final decision would be reached after a meeting with stakeholders following the Jummah prayers.
