President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged police officials to perform their duties with honesty, commitment and professionalism to strengthen law and order and contain criminal activities across the country.
He made the remarks on Thursday when Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
The President’s Press Secretary, Md Sarwar Alam, disclosed details of the meeting while briefing reporters afterward.
During the discussion, the President called for firm action against criminals but stressed that law-abiding citizens must be treated fairly and humanely.
He directed the police to take prompt and appropriate steps to reinforce the rule of law.
He also instructed the police leadership to intensify efforts against disinformation, misinformation, rumours, cybercrime, mugging, extortion and drug-related offences.
Ensuring the protection and security of women and children was also highlighted as a key responsibility.
The President underscored the need for authorities to keep the public regularly informed about these issues and to undertake broad-based awareness programmes.
Referring to the government’s efforts to protect citizens’ fundamental and democratic rights, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir directed police personnel to take effective measures to prevent extrajudicial killings, harassment of citizens and the filing of false cases.
At the meeting, IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir briefed the President on steps being taken to improve the morale of police personnel and modernise and digitalise the police force.
The police chief also sought the President’s overall support in carrying out the force’s responsibilities. In response, the President assured him of his full cooperation.
The President’s Military Secretary and Press Secretary were also present at the meeting.
