Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam has announced that waste removal from cattle markets and animal sacrifice sites in his area has exceeded the set target, while lessees who violated conditions will have their security deposits forfeited and be blacklisted.
Speaking at a press conference at Nagar Bhaban on Saturday, the administrator said a total of 36,086 tonnes of waste had been transported to the Matuail landfill by midnight on Saturday – the third day of Eid – surpassing the initial target of 33,942 tonnes.
According to DSCC figures, 14,814 tonnes of waste were removed on the first day, 8,977 tonnes on the second, and 12,295 tonnes on the third.
A total of 13,453 workers, including DSCC staff and Primary Collection Service Providers (PCSPs), worked in the field, utilising 2,117 small and large vehicles, 382 of which were specialised machinery.
The DSCC reported that 17,315 animals were sacrificed at 357 designated locations over the three days.
The administrator expressed frustration that lessees of 11 temporary markets failed to carry out waste removal within the designated time frame as per their agreements. He said the city corporation had to remove the waste on its own responsibility to prevent public suffering.
Consequently, a decision has been taken to forfeit the security deposits and blacklist the condition-violating lessees. Additionally, the DSCC has announced a significant increase in market security deposit amounts from next year.
On Eid day, the Prime Minister toured the capital for several hours to observe the waste removal situation. Noticing negligence, he immediately removed two officials and ordered action against six others, the DSCC administrator noted.
A DSCC press release said monitoring teams remain active in the field despite the conclusion of sacrificial activities. Citizens have been urged to contact the central control room immediately if they see waste accumulating anywhere in the DSCC area. Officials said such waste will be removed within one hour of receiving a report.
