The country’s law and order situation is deteriorating day by day, according to Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and deputy leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
Speaking at an Eid reunion and reception programme in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla on Sunday, Jamaat leader said incidents of crime, including child killings and rape, are increasing at an alarming rate, which he described as deeply concerning and unacceptable.
He alleged that in many cases, law enforcement agencies are unable to take strict action due to the involvement of ruling party members in criminal activities.
“We will raise these issues in Parliament. At the same time, we will also engage with relevant stakeholders outside Parliament to explore more effective and awareness-based solutions,” he said while responding to journalists after the event.
Responding to a question on whether the BNP-led government could be termed a failed administration, Taher said it is too early to make such a judgment.
“If the current situation continues, the people themselves will perceive it as failure. Whether we say it or not, the public will ultimately judge the government,” he added, warning that the situation could lead to a serious national crisis.
He urged both the BNP and the head of government to urgently identify the prevailing problems and take effective steps to address them, stressing that national development and public welfare must take priority over political disputes.
The programme was held at Chauddagram Central Eidgah ground, presided over by Upazila Jamaat Ameer Mahfuzur Rahman and conducted by Upazila Secretary Belal Hossain.
Among others present were Maulana Abdul Halim, Muhammad Shahjahan, and Zahidur Rahman, along with leaders and activists from various levels of the party.
A large number of participants from Chauddagram municipality and 13 unions also attended the event.
