Eight more people have died of dengue in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease this year to 233, while the total number of infections has crossed 75,000.
During the same period, 2,036 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, raising the total number of cases recorded this year to 75,730, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The figures were released in the daily dengue report of the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the DGHS on Monday.
Among the newly hospitalised patients in the past 24 hours, 1,215 were men and 821 were women.
The highest number of new cases was reported among people aged 26 to 30 years, with 297 patients. They were followed by 285 patients aged 21 to 25 and 261 patients aged 16 to 20.
Of the eight deaths reported in the past 24 hours, six were men and two were women. Among the deceased, two were aged between 61 and 65 years, while one each belonged to the age groups of 0–5, 6–10, 11–15, 21–25 and 26–30 years.
A total of 2,064 dengue patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours. Since 1 January, 70,258 patients have recovered and received discharge certificates.
Men account for 62.3 per cent of dengue cases this year, while women account for 37.7 per cent. Among dengue deaths, 47.4 per cent were men and 52.6 per cent were women.
According to the DGHS age-based data, the highest number of infections this year has been recorded among people aged 21 to 25 years, with 10,929 cases. The 26–30 age group recorded 10,800 cases, followed by 10,316 cases among those aged 16 to 20.
Dhaka’s two city corporation areas recorded 57,998 dengue cases this year, while areas outside the city corporations reported 17,732 cases.
Monthly data also showed a sharp rise in dengue infections. The country recorded 1,081 cases in January, 409 in February and 2,907 in June. Cases increased to 9,206 in July and surged to 39,884 in August. In September, 22,536 cases have been reported so far.
According to the DGHS’s overall data as of 28 September, Bangladesh has recorded 75,730 dengue cases this year, with 233 deaths. A total of 70,257 patients have recovered, while 5,240 patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
