In response to the proposed removal of Madaripur district from the Faridpur division, local residents held a human chain on Sunday morning, voicing their strong opposition to the move.
The protest, held on the Madaripur-Shariatpur regional road in front of the Madaripur District Commissioner’s office, also expressed discontent with separating Madaripur from the Dhaka division.
During the protest, participants submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner, Ms Yasmin Akter, urging that Madaripur remain within the Dhaka division.
The protesters also requested that the memorandum be forwarded to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
Key speakers at the event included President of the Madaripur Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Naimat Ullah, President of Safe Medical Services in Madaripur Mashur Rahman Parvez, cultural personality Enayet Hossain Nannu and General Secretary of the Imam-Muazzam Social Welfare Association Maulana Zahidul Islam.
They all made a firm declaration, saying, “We will not join any other division apart from Dhaka. Madaripur’s boundary will never be part of Faridpur.”
