The authorities have arrested an employee of railway crossing Md Helal in connection with the tragic collision between a passenger bus and a train that killed 12 people and injured 24 others.

The accident occurred around midnight on 22 March beneath the flyover at Paduar Bazar Bishwaroad in Comilla, when the passenger bus Mamun Special collided with a train at the railway crossing.

Among the deceased was Sohel Rana, whose maternal aunt, Shefali Akter, later filed a case with Laksam Railway Police Station under sections 304(c), 338, and 427 of the Penal Code 1860. The case, numbered 01, was registered on 23 March.

A press release issued by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11 and signed by Senior Assistant Director Mithun Kumar Kundu stated that preliminary investigations revealed the collision occurred because Md Helal, the gatekeeper on duty at the railway crossing, failed to close the gate.

Following intelligence reports, technological surveillance, and information from confidential sources, a RAB-11 team arrested Helal from the Shankuchail area under Burichang Police Station on the night of 24 March.

During questioning, Helal admitted to neglecting his duties, acknowledging that his failure to close the gate led to the collision.

Md Helal is currently being handed over to Laksam Railway Police Station under Chattogram Railway jurisdiction for further legal proceedings. The RAB also briefed the media from its Karwan Bazar Media Cell in Dhaka regarding the arrest and investigation.
