Detectives have detained Golam Sarowar Khan, cousin and associate of Chattogram’s top gangster Sajjad Ali Khan known as “Boro Sajjad”, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Police said a team from the Detective Branch conducted the operation based on secret intelligence. Sarowar was detained on Saturday as he prepared to flee abroad.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Aminur Rashid confirmed the matter on Sunday, saying Sarowar had been involved in various criminal activities in Dhaka and Chattogram under Sajjad’s command.
Authorities are now verifying the identity documents, travel papers, and details of his attempted escape. Officials said legal action will be decided once the scrutiny is complete.
Law enforcement sources reported that Sarowar had been using forged documents to pose as a Myanmar citizen. With this false identity, he obtained a Danish travel document and later attempted to escape to Oman by presenting misleading information. His plan was foiled when DB officers intercepted him at the airport’s departure zone.
Boro Sajjad is regarded as one of the most notorious figures in Chattogram’s underworld. Though currently abroad, sources say he continues to direct criminal operations in Bangladesh through WhatsApp and other online platforms.
Police sources added that Sajjad’s network remains active in Chattogram’s Chandgaon, Bayezid Bostami and Panchlaish areas, as well as in Hathazari and Raozan upazilas.
His associates have been accused of extortion, issuing threats, and engaging in violent activities in these regions, prompting multiple law enforcement operations.
Sajjad himself faces numerous allegations, including threatening businessmen over the phone, demanding extortion money, firing shots at homes and businesses, and involvement in killings.
Investigators are also gathering information on the role of his associates in these incidents.
