A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of a 10-storey commercial building built on 15 kathas of land in Savar, owned by former Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) Chairman Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam.
The order was issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib in response to a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), according to court sources.
The petition was submitted by ACC Deputy Director Md Masudur Rahman.
According to the ACC, Shibli is accused of facilitating the laundering of $3,61,000 into Bangladesh through false export claims and abuse of power.
He took $226,308 in bribes through a fabricated house rental agreement.
The petition claims this money was then transferred and converted into fixed assets through suspicious and illegal transactions, violating the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Money Laundering Act, and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The ACC further stated that Shibli misrepresented his family expenses to justify receipt of funds, later shown as advance rent, which were used to acquire property.
As such, the commission requested the court to seize the property to prevent further asset manipulation.
The former BSEC chief was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on February 4 from Dhanmondi.
The following day, he was sent to jail. While in custody, the same court also imposed a travel ban on him on 25 June.
