At least three people were injured when a clash broke out between two factions of the Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Chhatra Dal over a Facebook post on Sunday. Two of the injured received medical treatment at Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital.
The clash originated around 1:30pm on Sunday near a tea stall in the Victoria Park area adjacent to the university, before spreading to the Kathaltala area on campus. Eyewitness students reported seeing several individuals attacking others armed with iron rods and pipes.
The injured students have been identified as Madud, an Economics student from the 2025–26 academic session; Asif, an English student from the 2024–25 session; and Imon, a Public Administration student from the 2023–24 session.
According to eyewitnesses, an argument initially broke out between the two sides next to a tea stall in Victoria Park, which escalated into a fight that later moved to the Kathaltala area on campus.
Chhatra Dal activists stated that tension had been mounting on campus since Saturday (19 September) night following a Facebook post by Nahian Bin Onik, Joint Convenor of the JnU Chhatra Dal unit. The post allegedly contained taunting comments directed at the unit’s Member Secretary, Shamsul Arefin.
Nahian Bin Onik alleged that several students and outsiders accompanying Shamsul Arefin launched a sudden attack on them. “We were threatened with a beating last night as well, and we informed the university administration about the matter,” Onik said.
He added, “Today, while we were drinking tea near the Victoria Park gate, an unprovoked attack was launched on us with rods and pipes.” Onik further claimed that the majority of leaders and activists in Shamsul Arefin’s group are affiliated with Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir.
Repeated phone calls were made to JnU Chhatra Dal Convenor Mehedi Hasan Himel and Member Secretary Shamsul Arefin for comment, but neither answered.
