Leaders and activists of Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have detained a rickshaw puller and handed him over to the police on suspicion of his involvement with the banned organisation Chhatra League.
The incident occurred on Sunday, in front of the main gate of the university.
According to eyewitnesses, the rickshaw puller was chanting “Joy Bangla” slogan while passing by the main gate. At that time, JCD leaders and activists detained and interrogated him before handing him over to Kotwali Police Station.
The detained rickshaw puller identified himself as Monir, hailing from Barguna. However, whether he has any actual involvement with Chhatra League could not be immediately known.
Riasal Rakib, joint convenor of JnU unit of JCD who was present at the spot, said party leaders and activists have been positioning themselves in the campus and surrounding areas since Saturday, in protest against “lockdown” programme of the activities banned Awami League.
He said the rickshaw puller was detained while passing by at noon today and subsequently handed over to Kotwali Police Station.
Robiul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, confirmed that JCD leaders and activists caught a person and handed him over to the police. He said the detainee might have been beaten following his apprehension.
For this reason, he was sent to Mitford Hospital for primary medical treatment, and the OC added that he will be interrogated once he recovers.
