A Dhaka court has ordered the commencement of the trial against Syed Sohanur Rahman Siyam, son of retired Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali Jibon, in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The case involves allegations that he acquired wealth beyond known sources of income.
Following the hearing on Wednesday, Judge Begum Shamima Afroze of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge Court issued the order.
The court also fixed July 9 for recording witness testimony.
ACC Court Inspector Md Saiful Islam confirmed the development, saying Siam was produced before the court from prison for the hearing. He added that defence lawyers did not submit any discharge petition, after which the court proceeded with framing the charges.
The case involves allegations that Siam, a Chhatra League leader, accumulated Tk3.30 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income. The ACC submitted a charge sheet against him under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, following which he was shown arrested in the case.
Siam has remained in custody since 20 January after being arrested in connection with a high-profile civil service examination question paper leak case.
The proceedings are linked to three separate cases filed by the ACC on 5 January last year against Syed Abed Ali Jibon, his wife Shahrin Akhtar Shilpi and their son Siam over allegations of illegal wealth accumulation and suspicious financial transactions.
According to the ACC, Syed Abed Ali Jibon is accused of carrying out suspicious transactions worth Tk41.29 crore across 12 bank accounts, including deposits of Tk20.88 crore and withdrawals of Tk20.41 crore, as well as acquiring Tk3.72 crore in illegal wealth.
His wife, Shahrin Akhtar Shilpi, is accused of acquiring Tk1.26 crore in illegal assets and conducting suspicious transactions worth Tk3.56 crore through two bank accounts.
Siam remains in jail as the judicial process continues.
