A court in Dhaka has sent Syed Abed Ali Jibon, a former driver of the Public Service Commission (PSC), to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Foyez issued the order on Thursday after Abed Ali was produced in court at the conclusion of his remand.
ACC Assistant Director Al Amin had requested his detention in jail, which the court approved.
Earlier, on 15 January, the court had granted a three-day remand for Abed Ali.
The ACC’s remand petition stated that investigations revealed disproportionate assets and suspicious banking transactions involving several government officials, including Md Zakaria Rahman.
Though retired, Abed Ali was reportedly linked to a network involved in organised question paper leaks and maintained contacts with multiple government officials, allegedly securing positions through unethical means.
Authorities said he could provide crucial information and evidence for the case.
The ACC emphasised that Abed Ali’s interrogation in custody is essential to obtain key documents and testimonies for a thorough investigation.
