The interim government has declared 11 February as a general holiday ahead of the upcoming 13th parliamentary election.
As the election day on 12 February is a scheduled holiday, and the following two days, Friday and Saturday, are weekly holidays, there will be a total of four days of holidays surrounding the election.
Besides, a holiday for workers and employees in industrial areas will commence on February 10. This will allow workers in the garment sector and other industries to enjoy a continuous three-day break.
The decision was finalised during a meeting of the interim government’s advisory council on Thursday, chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the chief adviser, confirmed the decision during a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
Shafiqul explained that the primary objective of declaring 11 February as a general holiday is to facilitate voter travel and ensure an environment conducive to a fair election.
He added that the holiday for industrial workers was approved starting from 10 February so they could have three days of leisure.
