A Dhaka court has ordered businessman Selim Pradhan, former Ullapara Upazila Parishad vice chairman Abu Saeed Swapan, and Shahid Ahmed Mojumdar to be shown arrested in a case over the killing of madrasa student Nazim Uddin during the quota reform movement in the capital’s Bhatara area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah issued the order on Wednesday after hearing a police petition.
In the petition, the investigating officer said that preliminary findings of the investigation indicated the alleged involvement of the three accused in providing financial support, planning, and instigating the killing during efforts to suppress the anti-discrimination student movement.
The officer said showing them arrested was necessary for further investigation and for unearthing the full circumstances of the incident.
According to case documents, Nazim Uddin, a student of the Hifz section of a local madrasa in Bhatara, was shot in Banshtala area under Bhatara Police Station during the July 2024 quota reform movement.
He was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The documents further state that a CT scan of his head revealed around 180 pellets lodged inside, of which 12 were removed while the rest remained in his skull.
The petition also noted that Selim Pradhan is currently in jail in connection with a case filed at Gulshan Police Station and is facing multiple ongoing cases under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, Narcotics Control Act, Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, and the Penal Code.
Abu Saeed Swapan, former vice chairman of Ullapara Upazila Parishad and former general secretary of the Sirajganj district unit of the Awami League, is currently in custody in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Gulshan Police Station.
Shahid Ahmed Mojumdar is also in jail in another case filed under the Penal Code and Explosives Act.
Police said the application was filed to advance the investigation into the Nazim Uddin murder case and to determine the roles of the accused in the incident.
