BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has said that referring to Ghulam Azam and and his followers as the “great sons of the nation” is an insult to country’s valiant freedom fighters.
He questioned, “If Ghulam Azam and his associates are considered the best sons, then where does that leave the honour and dignity of the freedom fighters?”
Abbas made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying tributes at the altar of the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Tuesday morning, marking Victory Day.
He alleged that Jamaat has never wished for the country’s peace or independence since 1947 and continues to oppose the spirit of independence even today.
According to him, Jamaat’s objective has always been to keep the country unstable and perpetuate unrest in Bangladesh.
Abbas further said that Jamaat played an anti-liberation role in 1971 and is still engaged in similar efforts.
Responding to a question, Mirza Abbas said that 1971 and 2024 are two distinct and separate periods in their own contexts, adding that there is no scope for comparison between the two.
Highlighting the significance of Victory Day ahead of the upcoming elections, he conveyed greetings to the nation on behalf of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
At the same time, he alleged that the hopes and aspirations of nation-building after independence were shattered after Awami League came to power.
Abbas expressed hope that in the next election, people will vote for a political force that truly reflects their expectations.
BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, who was also present, said that if BNP comes to power, it will work to realise the dream with which Shaheed Ziaur Rahman had declared independence.
During the tribute-paying ceremony, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, along with Khaleda Zia’s adviser Aman Ullah Aman and leaders and activists from various levels of the party, were present.
