BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that those who took a stand against Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 are once again trying to re-emerge, but people of Bangladesh will not give the defeated forces that opportunity.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Tuesday morning on Victory Day after paying floral tributes at the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
He said, “Enemies of independence, those who stood against independence in 1971, are again trying to raise their heads today. But the freedom-loving people of Bangladesh, the independence-loving people of Bangladesh, the democracy-loving people of Bangladesh will foil all their conspiracies and will certainly keep independence and sovereignty intact and protect democracy.”
Stating that the struggle to keep Bangladesh’s independence intact will always continue, Mirza Fakhrul said, “We have taken an oath that the struggle we have carried out for democracy, the fight we are waging, we will certainly continue it.”
At the time, he expressed respect and gratitude on behalf of the party to the martyrs of the Liberation War, as well as on behalf of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
He also sought prayers from everyone for the recovery of Khaleda Zia, who is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
Regarding Tarique Rahman’s return to the country, he said, “We hope that Tarique Rahman will return to the country on 25 December. Our expectation is that his return will accelerate the struggle for democracy.”
