Jamaat Chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman has pledged to establish a “new political trend” in the coming days and asked for an opportunity to “do something good” for the country if given the chance to govern.
He made the pledge while speaking at an event organised to mark the Victory Day on Tuesday.
In his speech on Tuesday, he expressed his commitment to building a peaceful Bangladesh free from terrorism and extortion. He said, “We want to cast aside the rotten politics of the past. We will pursue a new kind of politics. On 12 February, a new Bangladesh will be unveiled.”
The Jamaat ameer also urged the Election Commission (EC) and the administration to carry out their duties impartially. “We seek no favour; just perform your duties neutrally… The days of buying people with black money are over,” he said.
Shafiqur claimed that one party treated the Liberation War as its personal property, turned others into subordinates, destroyed multi‑party democracy, and created a “death squad” in the name of the “Rakkhi Bahini”.
He alleged that, during that period, millions died in the 1974 famine because certain state officials sold off relief supplies sent from abroad. He further accused the Awami League of causing bloodshed whenever it came to power.
He also mentioned the killings on 28 October 2006, the 2009 BDR massacre, the Shapla Chattar crackdown, and the 2018 Subarnachar incident.
