Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has fined two shops at Bashundhara City Shopping Mall a total of Tk6 lakh for selling substandard infant food and cosmetic products without required testing and certification.
The fines were imposed during a mobile court operation conducted as part of BSTI’s ongoing nationwide market monitoring drive to ensure product quality and consumer safety.
During the operation, well-known retailer Almas Super Shop was fined Tk5 lakh after the mobile court found evidence that the outlet was selling low-quality infant food items, including chocolate, flavoured drinks and milk powder, as well as cosmetic products without mandatory BSTI testing and approval.
An online-based shop, ‘Sophia’s Beauty House’, was also fined Tk1 lakh for selling substandard cosmetic products.
The mobile court was led by BSTI Executive Magistrate Sabikun Nahar, with assistance from BSTI officials Md Safayet Hossain and Ahsan Habib Khan.
In a statement, BSTI said such market monitoring and mobile court operations were being conducted regularly across the country to ensure consumers have access to safe and quality products.
The authority warned that these drives would be strengthened further in the public interest.
BSTI also urged consumers to remain cautious while shopping and prioritise purchasing products approved by the organisation.
