A moving BRTC bus caught fire on the Dhaka–Barishal highway near the Ichladi bus stand toll plaza in Uzirpur upazila on Tuesday noon due to a mechanical fault.

The fire broke out around 11:45am in a BRTC bus (registration number Brahmanbaria-B 11-0004) heading from Barishal to Khulna. Officials said the blaze started from a battery connection malfunction at the rear of the bus.

The upper part of the bus was completely burnt, but no casualties were reported.

Upon receiving the news, a team from Uzirpur Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. Highway police and Uzirpur Model Police also arrived at the scene to manage the situation.

Aminur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gournadi Highway Police Station, said the bus had 30 passengers, all of whom escaped unhurt, though their belongings were destroyed.

Traffic on the highway was halted for about 20 minutes before being restored to normal.
