BRAC University has been awarded the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award “empowerment” trophy for enrolling the highest number of participants globally in the award’s non-formal education and learning program during the 2024–25 session.
The trophy was presented to BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar by British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke at a ceremony held at the RAOWA Complex in Dhaka on September 9. The event was hosted by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation Bangladesh, which promotes youth development through skills training, fitness, adventure, and volunteering.
Since joining the program in January 2020, 3,147 students from BRAC University have participated in the award’s activities, positioning the university as a leader among 125 institutions in Bangladesh implementing the programme.
“The residential semester and programmes like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award enable our students to learn leadership through real experiences, not just in classrooms,” said Professor Anwar. “This recognition underscores our commitment to shaping responsible leaders who are driven by community service and social responsibility.”
The “empowerment” trophy, designed by Italian artist Lorenzo Quinn, symbolises how the award empowers young people to grow, build confidence, and realise their potential.
BRAC University’s recognition highlights its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education) and 17 partnerships for the goals.
