Tanim Noor’s Eid release, ‘Bonolota Express’, has made a strong debut at the North American box office. The film earned $154,000 across Canada and the US in its first three days, marking the second-highest opening for a Bangladeshi film. Hawa remains the top performer with an opening of $159,000.
Mohammad Oliullah Sajib, president of international distributor Swapno Scarecrow, said the film entered the US domestic box office top 20, taking the 17th place. “Calling this success an understatement. This is an incredible achievement,” he added.
Based on its opening weekend, Bonolota Express has already become the fourth highest-grossing Bangladeshi film of all time, surpassing lifetime earnings of titles such as ‘Toofan’, ‘Priyotoma’ and ‘Debi’.
Director Tanim Noor expressed his gratitude and inspiration from the audience’s response. “I am grateful to the entire team. I am remembering the memories of Humayun Ahmed sir. His creation is our strength,” he said.
Released on April 3 in 52 theatres across North America and the UK, the film, based on Humayun Ahmed’s ‘Khichukkhan’, stars Sabila Nur, Shariful Razz, Chanchal Chowdhury and others. The distributor noted that such success was expected, following the confidence built by last year’s release ‘Utshob’.
