Police recovered the hanging body of a young man from a sluice gate in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari on Sunday morning.
The body was found at the Banpara sluice gate under Shoulmari Union of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Masud Rana, a resident of the area.
Family members said Masud returned home from Dhaka two days earlier. He left the house on Saturday but did not return at night.
Relatives searched for him at different places but found no trace.
On Sunday morning, local residents spotted Masud’s body hanging from a tree near the Banpara sluice gate and informed the police.
Jaldhaka police reached the spot and recovered the body. After preparing an inquest report, they sent it to the Nilphamari Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Local resident Nur Mohammad said Masud’s behaviour had appeared unusual over the past few days.
Jaldhaka police station officer-in-charge Nazmul Hossain said the exact cause of death could not be determined without the post-mortem report.
“We are investigating whether it was suicide or murder. Legal action will follow based on the findings,” he said.
