One of the most significant challenges of healthcare in Bangladesh is the issue of reliable blood donation. Due to the absence of a centralised system, patients and their families are forced to rely on personal networks or social media, which can be time-consuming and detrimental for critical medical emergencies.
BloodBridge, an innovative tech-driven health platform, aims to change the situation of countless patients. Through their upcoming mobile app, the platform aims to connect blood donors directly with recipients in real time.
The name “BloodBridge” signifies the platform’s mission to close a critical gap in healthcare by serving as a direct, real-life digital lifeline that connects blood donors with patients in urgent medical need.
Founded by two private university students, KM Ferdous Hasan Faysal and SM Khalid Mahmud, the idea behind the platform primarily stems from the lack of voluntary donors and organised systems. The 2024 July Uprising served as an immediate catalyst, as during that period hospitals overrun with mass casualties faced a severe blood shortage.
For Faysal, the reason is also personal. “When I was in college, one of my closest friends’ father had become very ill and desperately needed blood. I volunteered to donate but due to my allergies I couldn’t. My friend’s family faced a lot of difficulties finding a replacement donor and this motivated me to plan this initiative. The crisis during the 2024 protests became the driving factor,” said Faysal.
After collecting the necessary funding, the organisation officially began its journey on 9 August 2024. Initially operating as a localised, location-based manual web application, the mobile application will replace the semi-manual system with a fully automated, real-time dispatch network which will eliminate slow manual search queries.
“Instead of relying on manual efforts, we built a technology-driven platform to improve access to blood donation. Despite funding and operational challenges, we continued our work,” says co-founder SM Khalid Mahmud.
Partnering with Barikoi Maps, BloodBridge v1.0 brings together AI-powered and location-based features designed to make blood donation faster, safer, and more accessible across Bangladesh. The app’s “Map View” provides a real-time overview of nearby donors, recipients, blood banks and ongoing donation events. This allows users to identify the closest available help through advanced location-based searches with filters detailing blood group, distance and urgency.
“BloodBridge has a dedicated team who will ensure that the donor is suitable for the patient by directly communicating with them,” co-founder Khalid added.
Once a donor is matched, the live donor tracking feature enables recipients to monitor the donor’s journey in real time which improves coordination and reduces uncertainty during emergencies.
“From the very start, my vision was to create a platform which will provide quick service to patients. I wanted to create something that will provide services such as Uber or Foodpanda where the longest time a person usually waits is 30 minutes. Through this app recipients won’t have to wait long for suitable donors,” said Faysal.
One of the key features introduced within the app is the AI BriGo. By directly communicating with users, the AI will take requests from the users while collecting and validating their data. Then it would match the recipient with potential donors based on blood compatibility, distance, and availability.
It will then confirm and schedule a suitable donor while keeping a backup donor on standby. If a confirmed donor cancels, it will repeat the process, usually taking ten-minute intervals. BriGo will ensure that the donation has occurred and will close the case and update the user’s data.
According to Faysal, due to limited resources and funding, BriGo AI will initially operate as a chatbot. He also confirmed that the AI will be fully implemented in time as per the platform’s future roadmap.
Apart from blood donation, the app will also provide premium health services, especially for thalassemia patients. The service will prioritise blood support, access to dedicated donor pools and continuous care, which will be tailored towards their long-term transfusion needs.
Regular donors will receive official membership, recognition and health benefits such as a special “LifePass” badge and title. They will also receive annual digital certificates, special discounted diagnostic prices and free yearly full health checkups.
In addition, verified users can access integrated diagnostic services through the app, which include health reports, medical consultations and test scheduling, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to making healthcare support extend beyond blood donation.
The founders have stated their vision to revolutionise health service technology. According to them, the current roadmap indicates the platform developing a research institute and plans to turn the platform into a global lifeline.
